Most premium WordPress themes are heavy because they ship a page builder, a slider plugin, a demo importer and a licensing layer. Northwind ships none of that. It is a block theme built on the site editor, which means the layout tools are the ones WordPress already gives you, and the performance budget stays intact.
A typical Northwind page loads roughly 90 KB of CSS, JavaScript and fonts combined. There is no jQuery dependency, no render-blocking third-party request and no icon font. On modest shared hosting with a page cache, real-world Largest Contentful Paint lands comfortably under 1.5 seconds. Fonts are self-hosted with font-display: swap and preloaded, which also removes an external request from your privacy policy.
Patterns cover heroes, service grids, feature splits, pricing tables, testimonial layouts, team rosters, logo walls, FAQ accordions, call-to-action bands, contact sections and footers. Templates include front page, services archive and single, blog archive and single, and a full-width landing template with no header or footer for campaign pages. Every pattern is a native block pattern, so removing the theme leaves your content editable rather than filled with shortcodes.
The theme.json configuration exposes a complete palette, a fluid type scale, spacing presets and four style variations — default, warm, mono and high-contrast — switchable from the editor in one click. Custom colour and typography changes apply globally through the style engine, no child theme required for ordinary branding work.
WooCommerce templates are included and styled, schema markup is emitted for organisation, breadcrumbs and articles, and every template has been checked for keyboard navigation and contrast. Translation-ready with a bundled POT file and tested in right-to-left languages.
WordPress 6.5 or newer, PHP 8.1 or newer. No required plugins. WooCommerce 8.0+ only if you use the shop templates.
